1.40

上堂，僧問：「萬機休罷獨坐大方，猶是向下事，如何是向上事？」師云：「癡人面前不得說夢。」進云：「老和尚三寸甚密。」師云：「眾眼難謾。」進云：「只如僧問洞山：『如何是佛？』云：『麻三斤。』又作麼生？」師云：「大鵬展翅蓋十洲，籬邊之物空啾啾。」乃云：「昨日晴，今日雨，時分不相應，三日後看取。」拍禪床下座。

Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Resting all machinations and sitting alone in great breadth is still a matter facing downward. What is the matter facing upward?" The Master said, "One must not speak of dreams in front of an idiot." The monk advanced, saying, "The Venerable's three-inch [tongue] is very dense." The Master said, "The eyes of the assembly are hard to deceive." The monk advanced, saying, "What about when a monk asked Dongshan, 'What is the Buddha?' and he said, 'Three pounds of hemp'?" The Master said, "The great roc spreads its wings and covers the ten continents; creatures beside the fence chirp in vain." He then said, "Yesterday it was clear, today it rains; the seasons do not correspond. Look again after three days!" Striking the meditation couch, he descended from the seat.
