上堂，舉：「僧問利山：『眾色歸空，空歸何所？』山云：『舌頭不出口。』僧云：『為甚麼如此？』山云：『內外一如故。』」師云：「事存函蓋合，理應箭鋒拄，須還利山始得。若是徑山即不然，或問眾色歸空，空歸何所？芍藥華開菩薩面，椶櫚葉散夜叉頭。為甚麼如此？但辦肯心，必不相賺。」

Ascending the hall, he cited: "A monk asked Lishan, 'All colors return to emptiness; where does emptiness return?' Lishan said, 'The tongue does not leave the mouth.' The monk asked, 'Why is it like this?' Lishan said, 'Because internal and external are as one.'" The Master said: "Phenomena matching like box and lid, principle responding like arrowhead meeting arrowhead—it has to be Lishan to carry this off. If it were Jingshan, it would not be so. Were someone to ask, 'All colors return to emptiness; where does emptiness return?' Peony blossoms open as the faces of bodhisattvas; palm leaves scatter as the heads of yakṣas. Why is it like this? Just manage a committed heart, and you will certainly not be deceived."
