興化上堂云：「今日不用如何若何，便請單刀直入，興化為爾證據。」時有旻德長老，出眾禮拜，起來便喝，化亦喝，德又喝，化又喝，德禮拜歸眾，化云：「適來若是別人，三十棒一棒也較不得。何故？為他旻德會一喝不作一喝用。」頌云：

Xinghua ascended the hall and said, "Today there is no need for 'how' and 'what'; please enter directly with a single blade, and Xinghua will bear witness for you." At that time, Senior Monk Minde came forth from the assembly, made bows, and upon rising immediately gave a shout. Xinghua also gave a shout. Minde gave another shout, and Xinghua gave another shout. Minde made bows and returned to the assembly. Xinghua said, "Just now, if it had been anyone else, not one blow could have been spared from thirty blows of the staff. Why? Because this Minde understands how not to use a single shout as just a shout." His verse says:
