百丈侍馬祖游山歸，忽然哭，同事問云：「憶父母耶？」丈云：「無。」同事云：「被人罵耶？」丈云：「無。」同事云：「哭作甚麼？」丈云：「問取和尚。」同事往問馬祖，祖云：「爾去問取他。」同事回至寮中見百丈呵呵大笑，同事云：「適來為甚麼哭，如今為甚麼笑？」丈云：「適來哭，而今笑。」同事罔然。頌云：

Baizhang accompanied Mazu on an excursion in the mountains. Upon returning, he suddenly wept. A fellow student asked, 'Are you thinking of your parents?' Baizhang said, 'No.' The fellow student asked, 'Did someone scold you?' Baizhang said, 'No.' The fellow student said, 'Why are you crying?' Baizhang said, 'Go ask the Venerable.' The fellow student went to ask Mazu. Mazu said, 'Go ask him yourself.' The fellow student returned to the quarters and found Baizhang laughing out loud heartily. The fellow student said, 'Just now why were you crying, and now why are you laughing?' Baizhang said, 'Just now I was crying; right now I am laughing.' The fellow student was bewildered. A verse says:
