10.37

臨濟問僧：「甚麼處來？」僧便喝，濟便揖坐，僧擬議，濟便打。又一僧來，濟竪起拂子，僧禮拜，濟便打。復見僧來亦竪起拂子，僧不顧，濟亦打。頌云：

Linji asked a monk, "Where have you come from?" The monk shouted. Linji bowed and offered him a seat. The monk hesitated; Linji struck him. Another monk came; Linji held up his fly-whisk. The monk made a prostration; Linji struck him. Seeing yet another monk come, he also held up his fly-whisk; the monk paid no attention; Linji also struck him. The verse says:
