趙州一日在方丈內，聞沙彌喝參，州向侍者云：「教伊去。」侍者纔教去，沙彌便珍重。州向傍僧云：「沙彌得入門，侍者在門外。」頌云：
One day Zhaozhou was in the abbot's quarters and heard a novice call out for instruction. Zhaozhou said to the attendant, "Tell him to go away." The attendant had just told him to go, and the novice immediately said, "Take care!" Zhaozhou said to a bystander monk, "The novice has gained entrance through the gate; the attendant is outside the gate." His verse says:
