趙州一日在東司上，見文遠過，遂喚云：「文遠。」遠應諾，州云：「東司上不可與爾說佛法。」頌云：
One day Zhaozhou was at the latrine and saw Wenyuan passing by. He called out, "Wenyuan!" Wenyuan responded. Zhaozhou said, "At the latrine I cannot speak the Buddha Dharma with you." His verse says:
