趙州一日在佛殿上，見文遠禮佛，以拄杖打一下，遠云：「禮佛也是好事。」州云：「好事不如無。」頌云：
One day Zhaozhou was in the Buddha hall and saw Wenyuan bowing to the Buddha. He struck him once with his staff. Wenyuan said, "Bowing to the Buddha is also a good thing." Zhaozhou said, "A good thing is not as good as nothing." His verse says:
