19.32

從上諸聖無言語傳授，只說以心傳心而已。今時多是師承學解，背却此心，以語言傳授謂之宗旨。為人師者眼既不正，而學者又無決定志，急欲會禪，圖口不空，有可說耳。欲得心地開通，到究竟安樂之處，不亦難乎。

The sages from antiquity had no verbal transmission; they only spoke of transmitting mind with mind. Nowadays, people mostly rely on masterly inheritance and conceptual understanding, turning their backs on this mind, taking verbal transmission as the lineage doctrine. As teachers, their eyes are not straight, and the learners also lack determined resolve; in their haste to understand Chan, they only seek to keep their mouths from being empty, so they will have something to say. To wish for the mind-ground to open and penetrate, reaching the realm of ultimate peace and happiness—is that not difficult?
