2.22

圜悟和尚忌日，師拈香云：「這箇尊慈，平昔強項氣壓諸方，逞過頭底顢頇，用格外底儱侗，自言：『我能以木槵子，換天下人眼睛。』殊不知，被不孝之子將斷貫索穿却鼻孔。鼻孔索頭既在徑山手裏，要教伊生也由徑山，要教伊死也由徑山，且道以何為驗？」遂燒香云：「以此為驗。」

On the memorial day of the Venerable Yuanwu, the Master offered incense and said, "This venerable compassion in ordinary times was stiff-necked, his spirit overpowering the various quarters. He showed off excessive muddleheadedness and applied extraordinary vagueness, saying of himself: 'I can replace the eyes of everyone under heaven with soapberries.' Little did he know that his nostrils would be pierced through with a broken tether by an unfilial son! Since the end of the nostril-tether is in Jingshan's hands, letting him live is up to Jingshan, and having him die is up to Jingshan. Tell me, what serves as proof?" He then burned the incense and said, "Take this as proof."
