2.54

上堂，拈起拄杖示眾云：「還見麼？」又卓一下云：「還聞麼？若道實見實聞，正是隨聲逐色漢。」復舉起云：「還見麼？」又卓一下云：「還聞麼？若道不見不聞，正是避色逃聲漢。畢竟如何？」擲下云：「鶴有九皐難翥翼，馬無千里謾追風。」

Ascending the hall, [the Master] held up his staff, showed it to the assembly, and said: "Do you see?" He struck it once and said, "Do you hear? If you say you truly see and truly hear, you are someone chasing sounds and pursuing forms." He lifted it up again and said, "Do you see?" He struck it once again and said, "Do you hear? If you say you do not see and do not hear, you are someone avoiding forms and fleeing from sounds. What is it ultimately?" Throwing it down, he said, "A crane trapped in the ninefold marsh finds it hard to spread its wings; a horse lacking the capacity for a thousand leagues pursues the wind in vain."
