When Chan monk Qian returned, I received the teachings you bestowed and the verses written in your own hand; at first I was quite doubtful of them, but upon inquiring into Qian's details, I only then knew that you do not deceive yourself. The matter that had not been clarified for boundless eons has clearly appeared before you without being obtained from another; only then do you know that the joy of the Dharma and the pleasure of Chan cannot be compared to worldly pleasures. This rustic monk was so joyful for the Grand Dowager that for several days I forgot both sleep and food. For a son to be prime minister and for oneself to be a Grand Dowager of the state is not yet sufficient to be noble; to pick up a priceless jewel from atop a dung heap, an inexhaustible resource for hundreds of eons and thousands of lives, is only then true nobility. Yet you must never cling to this nobility; if you cling to it, you will fall into rank and nobility, no longer giving rise to compassion and wisdom to pity sentient beings. Keep this in mind! Keep this in mind!
