收書并許多葛藤，不意便解如此拈弄，直是弄得來，活鱍鱍地，真是自證自得者，可喜可喜。但只如此，從教人道這官人不依本分亂說亂道，他家自有通人愛，除是曾證曾悟者方知。若是聽響之流，一任他鑽龜打瓦，更批判得如來禪祖師禪好，儘喫得妙喜拄杖也。且道：「是賞伊，罰伊？」一任諸方更疑三十年。

I received your letter along with many verbal entanglements. I did not expect that you would be able to play with it like this—you have truly brought it into play so that it is vital and lively; you are truly one who has verified and attained it for yourself. How delightful, how delightful! Just remain like this, and let people say: 'This official does not keep to his proper place, but speaks and discourses wildly.' His family naturally has thorough people who appreciate it; only those who have personally verified and awakened to it will know. If it is the sort who just listen to echoes, let them bore into tortoise shells and strike tiles as they will, and even if they criticize Tathāgata Chan and Patriarch Chan excellently, they still fully deserve to take a taste of Miaoxi's staff! Now tell me: is this rewarding him, or punishing him? Let all places doubt it for another thirty years!
