4.16

上堂；舉：「馬祖與西堂、南泉、百丈中秋翫月次，祖指月云：『正當恁麼時如何？』西堂云：『正好修行。』百丈云：『正好供養。』南泉拂袖便行，祖云：『經入藏，禪歸海，唯有普願獨超物外。』」師云：「還知四大老落處麼？若也未知，聽取一頌：國清才子貴，家富小兒嬌，大家出隻手，彼此不相饒。」

Ascending the hall, the Master brought up: "When Mazu was enjoying the mid-autumn moon with Xitang, Nanquan, and Baizhang, Mazu pointed to the moon and said: 'Just at such a time, how is it?' Xitang said: 'Just right for cultivation.' Baizhang said: 'Just right for making offerings.' Nanquan shook his sleeves and walked away. Mazu said: 'The scriptures enter the canon; Chan returns to the sea; only Puyuan alone transcends beyond things.'" The Master said: "Do you know where the four elders landed? If not yet, listen to a verse: / When the state is peaceful, talented scholars are esteemed; / When the family is wealthy, the young children are indulged. / Everyone extends a single hand; / Neither side yields to the other."
