入院指方丈召大眾云：「這裏是烹佛烹祖大鑪韝，鍛生鍛死惡鉗鎚，莫怪主人無面目，法如是故非彊為。法既如是，又非彊為，且道：最初一句又作麼生？還委悉麼？釣竿斫盡重栽竹，不計功程得便休。」

Entering the monastery, he pointed to the abbot's quarters, addressed the assembly, and said, "Here is the great smelting furnace for boiling buddhas and refining patriarchs, the fierce pincers and hammers for forging life and forging death. Do not blame the host for having no face; because the Dharma is like this, it is not forced. Since the Dharma is like this and not forced, tell me: what about the very first sentence? Do you understand? Having chopped up all the fishing rods, I replant bamboo; without calculating the labour or progress, once obtained, I immediately rest."
