7.33

示眾，舉：「明招向火次，僧忽問：『目前無法，意在目前，不是目前法，非耳目之所到。未審此四句，那句是賓？那句是主？』明招撥開火云：『爾向這裏與我拈出一莖眉毛看。』僧云：『非但某甲，盡大地人喪身失命。』招云：『何故自把髻投衙？』」師云：「這僧有頭無尾，明招有尾無頭。若人道得頭尾圓全句，雲門與爾拄杖子。」

Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "When Mingzhao was warming himself by the fire, a monk suddenly asked, '"Before the eyes there are no dharmas; the intent is before the eyes. It is not a dharma before the eyes; it is not reached by ears or eyes." May I ask, of these four phrases, which phrase is the guest, and which phrase is the host?' Mingzhao poked open the fire and said, 'Pick out an eyebrow for me to see from right here!' The monk said, 'Not only I, but everyone in the whole great earth loses their body and life.' Mingzhao said, 'Why seize your own topknot and turn yourself in to the magistrate?'"
The Master said, "This monk had a head but no tail; Mingzhao had a tail but no head. If someone can utter a phrase complete with head and tail, Yunmen will give you his staff."
