結夏示眾：「今日是眾僧結制之辰，雲門菴比丘宗杲，與赤肉團上無位真人現前清淨大眾，以法界為伽藍，同諸菩薩九十日內安居其中，跳金剛圈、吞栗棘蓬，作夢中佛事、降鏡裏魔軍，三業清淨、六根明潔，身四威儀無諸過患，懸契如來一百四十大願，紹三寶種永不斷絕。苟能如是修證、如是安居，是大丈夫漢、是真出家兒，不須謹守蠟人、如鵝護雪；其或未然，趙州東壁掛葫蘆，莫道不疑好。」拍禪床下座。

Beginning the summer retreat, he instructed the assembly: "Today is the day the monks begin the retreat. Monk Zonggao of Yunmen Hermitage, together with the true person without rank upon the lump of red flesh and the present pure great assembly, taking the dharmadhātu as the monastery, will dwell peacefully within it with all the bodhisattvas for ninety days—jumping through the vajra hoop, swallowing the spiky chestnut burr, performing Buddhist works in a dream, subduing the demon armies in a mirror. The three karmic activities are pure, the six sense organs bright and spotless; the four deportments of the body are free from all faults, mysteriously matching the Tathāgata's one hundred and forty great vows, and continuing the seed of the Three Jewels without ever breaking off. If one can cultivate and realize like this and dwell peacefully like this, one is a great hero, a true home-leaver; there is no need to scrupulously guard a wax man or protect snow like a goose. If it is not yet so, Zhao Zhou hung a calabash on the east wall—do not say it is fine not to doubt." He struck the meditation bed and stepped down from the seat.
