8.38

示眾，舉：「道吾與漸源，至一家弔慰，源拊棺云：『生耶死耶？』吾云：『生也不道，死也不道。』源云：『為甚麼不道？』吾云：『不道不道。』回至中路，源云：『和尚快與某甲道，若不道，打和尚去。』吾云：『打即任打，道即不道。』」師云：「生也不道，死也不道，公案兩重，一狀領到。露刃吹毛，截斷綱要，脫却鶻臭衫，拈了炙脂帽，大坐當軒氣浩浩。」喝一喝，下座。

Instructing the assembly, he brought up [the following]: "Daowu and Jianyuan went to a house to offer condolences. Yuan patted the coffin and said, 'Alive or dead?' Wu said, 'I won't say alive; I won't say dead.' Yuan said, 'Why won't you say?' Wu said, 'I won't say, I won't say.' On their way back, halfway along the road, Yuan said, 'Master, quickly tell me! If you do not tell me, I will hit you.' Wu said, 'As for hitting, hit as you will; as for telling, I will not say.'" The Master said, "'I won't say alive; I won't say dead'—a twofold gong'an, received in a single indictment. Baring the blade to blow the hair, cutting off the essential guidelines; stripping off the hawk-stinking shirt, taking off the grease-fried hat, sitting grandly facing the veranda, his spirit vast and mighty." He gave a shout and descended from the seat.
