Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "Old Dongshan brought it up like that, and Old Yuanwu brought it up like that; I wonder how the Venerable brings it up?" The Master said, "One hand alone does not clap; two hands sound with a crack." The monk advanced, saying, "Gold is not traded for gold; water does not wash water." The Master said, "You missed it without even knowing." The monk advanced, saying, "Above is heaven, below is earth; what has been missed?" The Master said, "'Gold is not traded for gold; water does not wash water'—well?" The monk advanced, saying, "It comes straight down—quickly fix your eyes and look!" The Master said, "Still unable to leap out." He then cited: "A monk asked Touzi, 'Is there still an extraordinary matter in the entire canon of teachings?' Touzi said, 'Expounding out the great canon of teachings.' Another elder said, 'Expounding into the great canon of teachings.'" The Master said, "As for expounding out and expounding in, the two elders certainly had that. But if it is the extraordinary matter, even in three lifetimes and sixty kalpas they have not dreamed of it yet."
