Ascending the hall, a monk asked, "The dharmakāya has three kinds of illnesses and two kinds of light. Not asking about the light—I wonder if the dharmakāya possesses the four great elements as well?" The Master said, "It possesses them." The monk advanced, saying, "What is the dharmakāya?" The Master said, "Earth, water, fire, and wind." The monk advanced, saying, "What are the four great elements?" The Master said, "The lacquer bucket is not bright." The monk advanced, saying, "Above the dharmakāya, is there still something more?" The Master said, "Just understand it downwards." He then cited: "A monk asked Zhaozhou, 'Who is the person who has come out?' Zhaozhou said, 'All buddhas and bodhisattvas.'" The Master said, "Great and small Zhaozhou originally lacked courage! If someone were to ask Jingshan, 'Who is the person who has come out?' I would say to him, 'Muddy pigs and mangy dogs.' If he were to say, 'Jingshan's tongue has achieved such freedom,' I would also know that you are a lacquer bucket."
