Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: "A monk asked Dongshan, 'When cold and heat arrive, how should one avoid them?' Dongshan said, 'Why not go to the place where there is neither cold nor heat?' The monk said, 'What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat?' Dongshan said, 'When it is cold, it freezes the ācārya to death; when it is hot, it scorches the ācārya to death.' Another monk asked an elder master, 'The weather is so hot, where should one go to avoid it?' The elder said, 'Avoid it inside the boiling cauldron and glowing coals.' The monk said, 'How can one avoid it inside the boiling cauldron and glowing coals?' The elder said, 'The multitude of sufferings cannot reach there.'" The Master said, "Of the two elders, one extended his hands within the cold and heat, and the other extended his hands outside the cold and heat. The one who extended his hands within the cold and heat did not see the characteristics of cold and heat; the one who extended his hands outside the cold and heat was thoroughly cold and heat from head to toe. When Jingshan speaks like this, can you all distinguish it clearly? If you can distinguish it clearly, [it is like] Tiantai in the south and Wutai in the north; if you cannot distinguish it clearly, today is hotter than yesterday."
