Straight out, straight in;
straight walking, straight sitting.
Elder Chan Practitioner Zhi,
you must just be like this.
Originally complete of itself,
it sets up no coursework.
When hungry, eat rice;
when cold, face the fire.
It rests not with Gautama,
nor does it concern Bodhidharma.
If you formulate thoughts to deliberate,
you will conversely suffer calamity.
In speaking these words,
I have already incurred verbal fault;
before those with clear eyes,
it is a total conversational lapse.
I ask you to practice these words,
and not forget the grinding of bone.
