The boundless expanse of Lake Tai’s thirty-six thousand qing is the master’s mouth. The towering heights of Dongting’s seventy-two peaks are the master’s tongue. Without moving his mouth and without wagging his tongue, what he has spoken, what he speaks now, and what he will speak is neither deficient nor superfluous. Turning back the raging waves and lifting what had fallen, curing fatal illnesses deep in the organs, this is how the master bore the Great Dharma and led this Path. As for flying the kun-peng within the pore of a lotus fiber, or placing Mount Sumeru upon the eyelash of a midge, there is no measure of spaciousness or confinement. Having been born after the master, I did not know him in person; my uttering these words upon viewing his portrait today is solely to let the icchantikas, ignorant ordinary beings, and degenerate persons of ruined faculties know that our school possesses the wonder of direct pointing in single transmission.
