Do not take a fancy to the unusual words and wondrous phrases of the various quarters, the claims made by masters of lineages on their own, the teachings transmitted in secret rooms, and kinds of gong'ans of the ancients. When such miscellaneous poisons are gathered up in your storehouse consciousness, they cannot be taken out for kalpas and births. Not only will they be of no help at the shore of birth and death, but in daily life you will also be obstructed by them, so that your eye of the Way cannot become clearly penetrating. The ancients had no choice: seeing that you students had much differentiated intellectual understanding, turned your backs on the Way, and were bogged down in words and phrases, they used differentiated medicines to cure your differentiated diseases, causing the ground of your mind to be peaceful and joyous, reaching the realm of non-differentiation. Nowadays, on the contrary, people take differentiated words and phrases as extraordinary, clinging to the medicine as a disease—is this not lamentable?
