Ascending the hall, he cited: "When my late master Yuanwu was at Jiashan, he instructed the assembly, saying: 'The whole body is eye, yet cannot see; the whole body is ear, yet cannot hear; the whole body is mouth, yet cannot speak; the whole body is mind, yet cannot discern.' Letting alone the whole body for a moment—suppose there were no eye, how could one see? No ear, how could one hear? No mouth, how could one speak? No mind, how could one discern? If you can clear a path through this, then you will participate together with the ancient buddhas. Tell me, what person would you participate with?" The Master said, "A pity Jingshan was not there at the time! If I had been there, I would have struck a torch to see how thick that old fellow's face was. Right now, someone unable to bear it from the sidelines might come forth and say, 'The Venerable is also a man from Puzhou—what about that?' I would immediately say to him, 'In the Western Heavens heads are severed and arms cut off; here you take yourself away!'"
