2.36

Ascending the high seat on the founding patriarch's memorial day: "Today's gathering is the very season when the founding patriarch of this mountain, State Master Guoyi Dajue, completely brings forth the turning of the unsurpassable wheel of Dharma everywhere for everyone. The great earth shakes in the six ways and eighteen aspects, emitting a great sound; the music of the devas plays without being struck; Brahma-chants and songs naturally spread and perform; and precious flowers of the devas rain down simultaneously. Just at such a time, buddhas as numerous as the sands of dust, great bodhisattvas, arhats, the eight classes of devas and nāgas, and various ghosts and spirits arrive and assemble from other directions, all filled with joy, leaping and celebrating, simultaneously giving voice to say: 'Excellent! Rare Great Awakening Patriarch, swiftly preach this Dharma; we all come together to bear witness!' Bearing witness is certainly not absent, but what is this Dharma?" After a pause, he said, "Clouds have the momentum to leave the mountains; water has no sound plunging into the ravine."
