Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "'When the cow in Huaizhou eats grain, the horse's belly in Yizhou swells; searching throughout the world for a doctor, he moxas the left shoulder of a pig.' Is this a wondrous application of supernatural powers, or is it phenomena being naturally so?" The Master said, "It is neither a wondrous application of supernatural powers nor phenomena being naturally so." [The monk] advanced and said, "What is it ultimately?" The Master said, "Eyebrows eight feet long grow under the chin." He then said, "The Great Way is right before your eyes, yet right before your eyes it is difficult to see. If you wish to know the true substance of the Great Way, do not depart from sounds, forms, and words. If you seek the true substance of the Way through sounds, forms, and words, it is precisely raking through ashes searching for floating bubbles. If you depart from sounds, forms, and words to seek the true substance of the Way, it is very much like searching for Chang'an while inside Hanyuan Hall. If it is entirely not like this, what is it ultimately? / A kingfisher kicks over the rain on lotus leaves; / An egret breaks through the smoke of the bamboo grove."
