Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Gentleman Liu Yu went up to Yunju to give thanks for rain and asked Hongjue, 'Where does the rain come from?' Hongjue said, 'It comes from the place where you ask.' Liu Yu then made three prostrations and retreated joyfully. After walking several steps, Hongjue called out, 'Gentleman Liu!' He turned his head, and Hongjue said, 'Where does the asking come from?' The gentleman had no words; upon returning home he died after three days." The Master said, "Gentleman Liu Yu had no words, went home, and died after three days; he had scratched right where Hongjue itched, yet he simply did not know the path to turn his body around. At that time, when Hongjue said, 'Where does the asking come from?' had he only made three prostrations as before and retreated joyfully, he would have made Hongjue doubt for thirty years."
