Ascending the hall, [the Master] brought up: "Wuzhuo went to Mount Tai to pay homage to Mañjuśrī. Mañjuśrī asked, 'From where has the Venerable come?' Wuzhuo said, 'From the south.' Mañjuśrī said, 'How is the Buddha Dharma maintained in the south?' Wuzhuo said, 'In the age of the Degenerate Dharma, monks rarely uphold the monastic precepts.' Mañjuśrī said, 'How large is the assembly?' Wuzhuo said, 'Sometimes three hundred, sometimes five hundred.' Wuzhuo then asked, 'How is the Buddha Dharma maintained here, Venerable?' Mañjuśrī said, 'Commoners and sages dwell together; dragons and snakes intermingle.' Wuzhuo said, 'How large is the assembly?' Mañjuśrī said, 'Three-three in front, three-three in back.'" The Master said, "If Jingshan had seen him at that time, I would have said to him: 'Venerable, maintaining it in such a way is exceedingly difficult.'"
