Having prepared this mind, if you wish to understand this single move, you must first establish a resolute determination. Coming into contact with objects and encountering conditions, whether adverse or favorable, you must take hold firmly and be master, not accepting all manner of heterodox teachings. In daily life responding to conditions, constantly stick the two words 'impermanence is swift' and 'birth and death' right on the tip of your nostrils. It is also like owing someone a debt of hundreds of thousands of strings of cash with no money to repay, while the creditor guards your doorway; in grief and fear, pondering ten thousand things, you seek repayment but cannot manage it. If you constantly maintain this mind, then you will have a share in making progress. If you half advance and half retreat, half believing and half disbelieving, you are not as good as an ignorant fool in a three-house village. Why is this? Because he knows nothing and understands nothing at all, yet he lacks so many evil views and evil perceptions to create obstacles; he merely adheres to foolishness entirely. An ancient worthy said: 'Investigate the ultimate principle thoroughly; take awakening as the norm.' In recent years there are many ancestral masters who do not believe in awakening; they say that awakening is deceiving people, that awakening is an establishment, that awakening is holding firm, that awakening is falling into the secondary; wearing lion skins while uttering the yelps of jackals, they are beyond count. Those who lack the eye of Dharma discrimination are often bewitched by this sort; one cannot fail to reflect and examine with care. This is the third model of an ancestral master pointing out and receiving the deluded multitude, causing them to see the moon and forget the finger. Layman Miaoming, wishing to leap out of the pit of birth and death: those who make this statement are called correct speakers; those who make other statements are called heterodox speakers. Reflect on this.
