Ascending the hall: "Mind itself is buddha, there is no other buddha; buddha itself is mind, there is no other mind. It is like a fist making a palm, like water forming waves: waves are water, palm is fist. This mind belongs neither to inside, outside, nor between; this buddha belongs neither to past, future, nor present. Since it belongs neither to inside, outside, nor between, and also does not belong to past, future, nor present, this mind and this buddha are entirely nominal designations. Since they are nominal designations, can that which is expounded in the entire great canon of teachings be real? Since it is not real, old Śākya could not have opened his two flaps of skin in vain and wagged his three inches of tongue. In the end, what is it? Just know to do good deeds; do not ask about the journey ahead."
