Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Yunmen asked the duty-monk (zhisuì), 'What did you do today?' The duty-monk said, 'I cut thatch.' Yunmen said, 'How many ancestral masters did you cut down?' The duty-monk said, 'Three hundred.' Yunmen said, 'Striking three thousand in the morning and eight hundred in the evening, the eastern house's ladle handle is long, the western house's ladle handle is short—what about it?' The duty-monk had nothing to say. Yunmen took up his staff and struck [him]." The Master said, "The duty-monk had nothing to say, yet three hundred ancestral masters naturally bear witness. Although Yunmen executed the order, fundamentally his staff-head had no eyes."
