Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Zhaozhou instructed the assembly, saying, 'You must not pass your time in vain: be mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma, mindful of the Saṅgha.' Then [a monk] asked, 'What is the student's own mindfulness?' Zhaozhou said, 'Who is the one being mindful?' The monk said, 'There is no companion.' Zhaozhou scolded him, saying, 'This donkey!'" The Master said, "Although this monk had no companion, gathering into crowds and forming bands, he creates a racket that bothers people to death. Although Zhaozhou is a fine donkey, he just does not know how to graze on grass."
