Ascending the hall, [the Master] cited: "Dharma Master Zhao said, 'When it is said that all dharmas are not different, does it mean that one must lengthen the duck's legs and shorten the crane's, or level the mountains and fill the valleys before they are considered without difference?' Great Master Yunmen said, 'The long is naturally long; the short is naturally short.' He also said, 'These phenomena abide in phenomenal positions; the characteristics of the world are permanently abiding.' He then held up his staff and said, 'The staff is not a permanently abiding dharma.'" The Master then held up his staff, called to the assembly, and said, "Gouging out the pupils of your eyes, where do you see Dharma Master Zhao's dharma of non-difference? Knocking out the marrow from your bones, where do you see Great Master Yunmen's permanently abiding dharma?" Throwing it down, he said, "Divide your body in two places to see." He descended from the seat.
