Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "When one is fully endowed with the dharmas of an ordinary person, but an ordinary person does not know it, how is it?" The Master said: "Good news." The monk continued: "When one is fully endowed with the dharmas of a sage, but a sage does not understand it, how is it?" The Master said: "Also good news." The monk continued: "I wonder, what kind of news is it?" The Master said: "Seeing people, one only knows how to smile; playing with things, one does not know their names." The monk continued: "If one does not meet running water, one should still cross another mountain." The Master said: "Mountain Master Xiu has arrived!" A monk asked: "When a person is atop a solitary peak with no way to emerge, how is it?" The Master said: "Good news." The monk continued: "Why does the Master consistently stand like a wall of ten thousand fathoms?" The Master said: "Try saying a phrase facing where the wall stands ten thousand fathoms." The monk continued: "Stirring the long river into curds, transforming the great earth into yellow gold." The Master said: "Hold on a bit." Then he said: "One person is atop a solitary peak with no way to emerge; one person is at the crossroads with nowhere to turn. It is neither Śākyamuni nor Vimalakīrti. If here you recognize their true face, only then will you recognize what Mountain Master Xiu said: 'Fully endowed with the dharmas of an ordinary person, an ordinary person does not know; fully endowed with the dharmas of a sage, a sage does not understand. If a sage understood, he would be an ordinary person; if an ordinary person knew, he would be a sage.' Is there anyone who recognizes this? If you recognize it, the ordinary person and the sage, atop the solitary peak, and at the crossroads, are right here. If you have not yet recognized it, leave it until it cools down to look at it."
