Ascending the hall, a monk asked: "When speech, silence, motion, and stillness are completely uninvolved, and non-speech, non-silence, non-motion, and non-stillness are also uninvolved, how is it?" The Master said: "You reap what you sow." [The monk] said: "Even if it is like this, it is not involved." The Master then struck him, and then said: "Buddhas and sentient beings originally have no different characteristics; it is only because of delusion and awakening that there are different paths. Although they are called different paths, when deluded, this one has never been deluded; when awakened, this one has never been awakened. Therefore it is said: 'Just as the substance of empty space is not the manifold characteristics, yet it does not prevent those manifold characteristics from manifesting.' If you can see it like this, only then will you believe that: 'Before leaving Tuṣita, he had already descended into the royal palace; before leaving his mother's womb, he had already finished delivering people.' These are true words, not deceitful words. If you can believe them, their use will be inexhaustible; if you cannot believe them, you are still inside them."
