Ascending the hall for the end of the summer retreat, [the Master] picked up his staff and said, "The one hundred and twenty days of summer, day after day without gap or lack: the open pillars display their spiritual powers, the lanterns show their clumsiness and ugliness. Thoroughly penetrating or not, come back to the staff's tip to have it decided for you." He struck [the floor] once.
