Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "When Devadatta was in hell, the World-Honoured One had Ānanda send an inquiry, saying, 'Can you endure it being in hell?' He said, 'Although I am in hell, it is like the bliss of the third dhyāna heaven.' The World-Honoured One again had Ānanda send an inquiry: 'Do you still seek to get out?' He said, 'I will get out as soon as the World-Honoured One enters hell.' Ānanda said, 'The World-Honoured One is the Great Master of the Three Realms; how could he have any share in entering hell?' He said, 'Since the World-Honoured One has no share in entering hell, how could I have any share in getting out of hell?'"
The Master said, "Since there is neither a share of getting out nor a share of entering, what do you call old man Śākya? What do you call Devadatta? What do you call hell? Do you understand? Carrying the jug myself to buy village wine, yet putting on a robe to act as the host."
