Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "Muzhou asked a monk, 'Where did you leave recently?' The monk said, 'Hebei.' Muzhou said, 'In Hebei there is Venerable Zhaozhou; did you ever go there, Elder?' The monk said, 'I left there recently.' Muzhou said, 'What words and phrases did Zhaozhou show his disciples?' The monk then cited the dialogue on drinking tea. Muzhou then said, 'How shameful!' He then asked the monk, 'What was Zhaozhou's meaning?' The monk said, 'It was merely a temporary expedient.' Muzhou said, 'How miserable, Zhaozhou! You have had a ladleful of shit splashed on you!' and struck him. Later, Xuedou said, 'This monk was capable of that—intolerably splashing a ladleful of shit on those two ancient buddhas.'"
The Master said, "Xuedou only knew that a ladleful of shit was splashed on the two of them, Zhao[zhou] and Mu[zhou]. Little did he know that this monk was first splashed with a ladleful of shit by Zhaozhou, and when he reached Muzhou, he suffered yet another ladleful. It is just that he did not perceive the smell. If he had perceived the smell, where would there be two ancient buddhas?"
