Instructing the assembly, he brought up the following: "Shitou asked Changzi, 'Where did you come from?' Changzi said, 'From Lingnan.' Shitou said, 'Is the whole composition of merit on the summit of Mount Dayu accomplished yet?' Changzi said, 'It has been accomplished for a long time; it only lacks dotting the pupils.' Shitou said, 'Do you want the pupils dotted?' Changzi said, 'Please do so.' Shitou lowered one foot. Changzi then bowed. Shitou said, 'What did you see that you bowed?' Changzi said, 'Like a flake of snow on a red-hot stove.'"
The Master said, "There is much deliberation in the assembly. Some say, 'Merit without eyes—what is there to dot?' Some say, '"Do you want the pupils dotted?" Waiting for him to say "Please do so," he should have struck him right across the back.' If so, it cannot avoid defiling this merit. For Yunmen it is not so: waiting for this old fellow to lower one foot, he would simply say, 'Thank you for your trouble, Venerable.'"
