Instructing the assembly, he cited: "Nanquan was sitting when a monk inquired after his health and stood with folded hands. Nanquan said, 'Too worldly.' The monk joined his palms. Nanquan said, 'Too monkish.' The monk was speechless."
The Master said, "Joining the palms is too monkish; folding the hands is worldly again. When it is not like either at all, your venerable body has nowhere to settle. Where there is nowhere to settle, there is a handle: Oṃ suru-suru śrī-śrī." Giving a shout, he said, "What is this? Lately the king's decrees have been somewhat strict; poaching in another's trade and seizing the market is not permitted."
