Addressing the assembly, he brought up: "One day Yunmen took up his staff and said: 'Ordinary people genuinely call it existent; the Two Vehicles analyze it as non-existent; pratyekabuddhas call it illusory existence; bodhisattvas realize its very substance is empty. When patch-robed monks see a staff, they simply call it a staff; when walking, they just walk; when sitting, they just sit; none of it may be stirred in the least.'" The Master said: "I am not like old man Yunmen, gouging out holes in empty space." Suddenly taking up his staff, he said: "The staff belongs neither to existence nor to non-existence; it belongs neither to illusion nor to emptiness." Striking once, he said: "Ordinary people, the Two Vehicles, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas all come here and each obtains its use according to their capacities; only in the province of patch-robed monks does it become harm and enmity: wanting to walk, they cannot walk; wanting to sit, they cannot sit. Taking a step forward, their path is obscured by the staff; taking a step back, their nostrils are pierced by the staff. Right now, is there anyone unwilling to submit? Step forward and test it out face-to-face with the staff! If not: next year there will still be new branches, unsettling the spring breeze without end."
