Conducting mourning and offering incense for Master Yuanwu, he pointed to the portrait and said, "This old monk spent his whole life blabbing and disturbing the monasteries. Recently I heard he passed away in Shu; we may rejoice that all under heaven is at peace. Although Yunmen in former years was close to him, after all I never heard him say a single sensible word. Therefore today I prepare a share of offerings, pour a cup of tea, and burn this stick of incense to smoke his nostrils. This is not to repay virtue or requite kindness, but simply to insult him." Calling to the assembly, he said, "Since I never heard him say a single sensible word and have no kindness or virtue to repay, why did I go out of my way to make this laughingstock? Do you understand? The enmity has a head; the debt has a master. By chance I slipped and fell to the ground, and to this day the grievance has penetrated to the marrow of my bones." Thereupon he burned incense.
