Instructing the assembly, he cited: "Whenever Baizhang gave instruction, an old man would constantly follow the assembly to listen to the Dharma. When the assembly withdrew, the old man also withdrew. Suddenly one day he did not withdraw. Baizhang then asked, 'Who is the one standing in front of me?' The old man said, 'I am not a human being. In the past, in the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, I once resided on this mountain. Because a student asked, "Does a person of great cultivation still fall into cause and effect or not?", I replied, "He does not fall into cause and effect," and for five hundred lifetimes I fell into the body of a wild fox. Now I ask the Venerable to provide a turning phrase on my behalf, so that I may be freed from the wild fox body.' The old man then asked, 'Does a person of great cultivation still fall into cause and effect or not?' Baizhang said, 'He is not blind to cause and effect.' The old man was greatly enlightened upon these words and was freed from the wild fox body." The Master said: / "'Not falling' and 'not blind'— / Half bright and half dark. / 'Not blind' and 'not falling'— / Both ends are empty and barren. / That wild fox five hundred lives ago— / Now vainly chased in cold blood." / He gave a shout and said, "Since there is a guest from Jiangnan among the seats, do not sing of partridges before the wine jar."
