Hanging the portrait for Master Gao'an Wu, he held up the portrait scroll and showed it to the assembly, saying: "The true and real exposition atop Lotus Flower Peak; / returning from the Three Pagodas, he revealed the mechanism once again. / The path at both places is thoroughly liberated; / not a dust speck in the lands fails to shine fully with radiance. / The radiance is indeed what everyone knows exists; but tell me: where is the original face of the old man Gao'an? Do you understand thoroughly? Before beings and buddhas were equipped, before the world was formed, his eyebrows and eyes were distinctly clear, completely manifest. If someone recognizes it here, he will walk hand in hand with this old man, and not make calculations of names and appearances toward the scroll. If it is not yet so, Yunmen cannot avoid following convention and becoming topsy-turvy." He then unrolled it and said: "Do you still see? If this is it, there are two of them; if this is not it, you miss it right to its face. Not missing it, there are not two of them: with no position arranged in the Patriarchs' Hall, sit idly for a while in the Pavilion of Utter Stillness."
