師云：「圓通秀禪師因雪下云：『雪下有三種僧，上等底僧堂中坐禪，中等磨墨點筆作雪詩，下等圍爐說食。』予丁未年冬在虎丘，親見此三等僧，不覺失笑，乃知前輩語不虛耳。」

The Master said: 'Chan Master Yuantong Xiu, because of falling snow, said: "Under the snow there are three kinds of monks: the superior sit in meditation in the monks' hall; the mediocre grind ink and wet their brushes to write poems about snow; the inferior huddle around the hearth and talk of food." In the winter of the dingwei year (1127), when I was at Tiger Hill, I saw these three kinds of monks with my own eyes and could not help bursting into laughter, realizing that the words of the predecessors were not empty.'
