保寧勇禪師二上足，處清、處凝，同參白雲端禪師，凝在侍者寮最久，端有膈氣疾，凝常煨蘆菔，以備無時之需。端作傅大士講經因緣頌曰：「大士何曾解講經，誌公方便且相成，一揮案上俱無取，直得梁王怒眼睛。」舉為凝曰：「努底是什麼？此一句乃為凝說老婆禪也。」凝以為親聞，故綴於頌下。後住舒州天柱山，清住龍舒太平，有大機辯，五祖演和尚畏敬之。清謂凝曰：「吾弟禪，乃是為老和尚煨蘆菔換得底。」

Chan Master Baoning Yong's two chief disciples, Chuqing and Chuning, studied together under Chan Master Baiyun Duan. Ning remained in the attendants' quarters the longest. Duan suffered from a chest ailment, and Ning regularly roasted radishes to have them ready for unpredicted needs. Duan wrote a verse on the story of Mahāsattva Fu preaching the scriptures: "When did the Mahāsattva ever know how to preach the scriptures? / Master Zhi's expedient means just helped him along. / With one strike on the table, neither grasped anything; / Directly causing the King of Liang to glare with angry eyes." He brought this up to Ning, saying, "What is this glaring with anger? This single line is me speaking grandmother Chan for Ning." Ning took this to be a direct instruction he personally heard, and therefore appended it beneath the verse. Later he resided at Mount Tianzhu in Shuzhou, while Qing resided at Taiping in Longshu. Qing possessed great dynamic eloquence; Master Wuzu Yan held him in awe and respect. Qing said to Ning, "My brother's Chan was exchanged for roasting radishes for the old master!"
