真淨會下，有昭泰首座到五祖，祖見舉真淨語錄，乃讚云：「此是大智慧人。」師云：「老南下尊宿，五祖只肯晦堂真淨二老而已，自餘皆不肯他也。五祖為人，如綿裏一柄刀相似，纔拶著便將咽喉，一刺刺殺爾去也。若是真淨，脚上著也即脚上殺爾，手上著也即手上殺爾，咽喉上著也即咽喉上殺爾。」

In Zhenjing's assembly, Head Monk Zhaotai went to Wuzu. When Wuzu saw him cite Zhenjing's recorded sayings, he praised them, saying: 'This is a person of great wisdom.' The Master remarked: 'Among the venerable elders under Old Nan, Wuzu approved of only the two elders Huitang and Zhenjing; he did not approve of any of the rest. When Wuzu guided people, he was like a blade wrapped in cotton: as soon as you pressed against it, he would stab you right in the throat, striking you dead. As for Zhenjing, if he struck your foot, he would kill you right at the foot; if he struck your hand, he would kill you right at the hand; if he struck your throat, he would kill you right at the throat.'
