保寧勇禪師，四明人，初更衣依雪竇顯禪師問道，雪竇呵為央庠座主，勇不意。堂儀纔滿，即抽單望雪竇山禮拜誓曰：「我此生行脚參禪，道價若不過雪竇，定不歸鄉。」勇至長沙雲蓋，參見楊岐會和尚，與白雲端和尚為弟昆，後出世住保寧。勇道播叢林，果如其言。信人之志氣，安可不立耶！

Chan Master Baoning Yong was a native of Siming. When he first changed his robes, he relied upon Chan Master Xuedou Xian to inquire about the Way. Xuedou scolded him as an awkward lecture-master; Yong did not mind. As soon as his term in the hall was complete, he packed his bedding, bowed toward Mount Xuedou, and made a vow, saying, “In this lifetime traveling on foot and investigating Chan, if the value of my Way does not surpass Xuedou's, I will definitely not return to my home village.” Yong reached Yungai in Changsha, where he visited Master Yangqi Hui, becoming a brother-disciple to Master Baiyun Duan; later he assumed an abbacy and resided at Baoning. Yong's Way was proclaimed throughout the monastic groves, just as he had said. Truly, how can a person's determination not be established!
