王荊公，一日問張文定公曰：「孔子去世百年生孟子，亞聖後絕無人，何也？」文定公曰：「豈無人，亦有過孔孟者。」公曰：「誰？」文定曰：「江西馬大師坦然禪師，汾陽無業禪師，雪峯、巖頭、丹霞、雲門。」荊公聞舉，意不甚解，乃問曰：「何謂也？」文定曰：「儒門淡薄，收拾不住，皆歸釋氏焉。」公欣然嘆服。後舉似張無盡，無盡撫几嘆賞曰：「達人之論也。」

One day, Duke Wang of Jing asked Duke Zhang Wending, “A hundred years after Confucius passed away, Mencius was born; why has there been no one at all after the Second Sage?” Duke Wending said, “How could there be no one? There have also been those who surpassed Confucius and Mencius.” The Duke said, “Who?” Wending said, “Great Master Ma of Jiangxi, Chan Master Tanran, Chan Master Wuye of Fenyang, Xuefeng, Yantou, Danxia, and Yunmen.” When Duke Jing heard these named, he did not quite understand the meaning, so he asked, “What do you mean?” Wending said, “The Confucian school became weak and insubstantial and could not hold them; they all returned to the Buddhist school.” The Duke was delighted and sighed in admiration. Later he recounted this to Zhang Wujin, and Wujin patted the desk and praised it, saying, “The argument of a man of thorough understanding!”
